Sanhaja

The Sanhaja were a confederation of Amazigh (Berber) peoples whose communities inhabited parts of the western Sahara and Maghreb. They included groups central to trans-Saharan trade and the rise of the Almoravid movement.

Amazigh peoples: Indigenous peoples of North Africa who speak or historically spoke Berber languages. Sanhaja groups belonged to the wider Amazigh population of North Africa.
Trans-Saharan trade: The networks that moved goods, people, and ideas across the Sahara. Sanhaja communities participated in and helped connect routes crossing the desert.
Yahya ibn Ibrahim: An eleventh-century Sanhaja leader associated with the beginnings of the Almoravid reform movement. His pilgrimage and return are linked in historical accounts to the movement's founding.
Zenata: A major grouping of Amazigh peoples historically prominent across the Maghreb. Zenata political and tribal histories developed alongside, but were distinct from, Sanhaja affiliations.
Western Sahara: A territory and geographic region on the Atlantic coast of northwestern Africa. The western Sahara formed a major setting for Sanhaja communities and their political history.
Almoravid dynasty: A Berber Muslim dynasty that ruled parts of North Africa and al-Andalus in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. Sanhaja groups formed the core of the movement that established Almoravid rule.
Abdallah ibn Yasin: A Muslim scholar and preacher associated with the formation of the Almoravid movement. He organized religious discipline among Sanhaja followers and helped build their movement.
Masmuda: A grouping of Amazigh peoples associated especially with the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Masmuda origins distinguish the Almohad movement from the Sanhaja roots of Almoravid power.
Sanhaja confederation: A historical grouping of Saharan Amazigh tribes associated with the Sanhaja name. This narrower grouping clarifies how the broad ethnonym could describe allied tribes.
Sijilmasa: A medieval trading city and oasis in southeastern Morocco, important to trans-Saharan commerce. Control of this northern Saharan gateway mattered to Sanhaja-led Almoravid expansion.
