Sanitary movement

The sanitary movement was a nineteenth-century public health reform movement that sought to prevent disease through clean water, effective drainage, and removal of human waste.

Industrial Revolution: The transition to mechanized production and factory-based economies that began in Britain in the eighteenth century. Rapid industrialization drew people into cities whose water and waste systems could not keep pace.
Sewerage: The systems and processes used to collect and convey sewage away from populated areas. Sewer networks were a central means of removing human waste from crowded cities.
John Simon: An English physician who served as a leading public health official in Victorian Britain. As medical officer to the Privy Council, he advanced sanitary administration and health investigation.
Public health: The organized effort to protect and improve the health of populations through collective action. The movement helped establish population health as a responsibility of public institutions.

Miasma theory: The theory that diseases such as cholera spread through harmful air arising from decay and filth. Many reformers used its language of foul air to argue for removing urban waste.
Drainage: The removal of excess water from land or built environments through channels, pipes, or other systems. Urban drainage helped remove standing water and carry waste away from homes and streets.
