Santiago Metropolitan Region

A region of central Chile encompassing Santiago, the national capital, and surrounding urban and rural communes. It is Chile’s most populous administrative region.

Santiago: Chile’s capital and largest city, situated in the Santiago Basin. The region’s urban core and seat of national government.
Greater Santiago: The continuous urban area centered on Santiago and extending across neighboring communes. It is the region’s principal urban settlement, though its extent differs from the administrative boundary.
Demographics of Chile: The size, distribution, and characteristics of Chile’s population. The metropolitan region contains a large share of the country’s residents.
Valparaíso Region: A region of central Chile on the Pacific coast, northwest of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. It is the neighboring coastal region and a major destination for travel from Santiago.
Santiago Province: A province in central Chile containing most of the communes of Greater Santiago. It contains the capital and much of the region’s metropolitan area.
Santiago Metro: The rapid-transit rail system serving Santiago and nearby urban areas. It carries commuters across the region’s densely settled core.
Government of Chile: The national institutions through which Chile is governed. National executive, legislative, and judicial institutions are concentrated in the capital region.
O'Higgins Region: A region of central Chile directly south of the Santiago Metropolitan Region. Its rural and agricultural profile contrasts with the capital region’s urban concentration.
Puente Alto: A commune in southeastern Greater Santiago and one of Chile’s most populous municipalities. Its large population shows that the metropolitan region extends well beyond central Santiago.
Santiago International Airport: Chile’s principal international airport, located in the commune of Pudahuel near Santiago. It connects the region to domestic and international travel networks.
