Santiago Ramón y Cajal

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852–1934) was a Spanish neuroscientist whose studies of nervous tissue established the neuron doctrine: the nervous system is composed of discrete cells.

Neuron doctrine: The theory that the nervous system consists of discrete cells that communicate at specialized junctions. Cajal’s observations supplied its strongest early evidence, against the idea that nervous tissue formed one continuous web.
Synapse: A junction where one neuron communicates with another cell, usually through chemical or electrical signals. The neuron doctrine placed communication between separate cells at junctions rather than through a continuous mesh.
Camillo Golgi: An Italian physician and scientist who developed the silver staining method for visualizing nervous tissue. Golgi’s technique enabled Cajal’s work, while Golgi’s reticular theory opposed his conclusions.
Neural development: The processes through which nervous-system cells are generated, differentiated, and organized. Cajal’s studies of growing axons and developing tissue helped establish neural development as a field of inquiry.
Golgi staining: A histological method that uses silver compounds to stain a small fraction of neurons in their entirety. Camillo Golgi’s method made the branching shapes Cajal studied visible under a microscope.
Dynamic polarization: Cajal’s principle that nerve impulses generally travel through a neuron from its receptive regions toward its output region. It gave functional direction to the cellular architecture he inferred from neuronal shapes.
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine: An annual international award recognizing major discoveries in physiology or medicine. Cajal shared the 1906 prize with Golgi for their work on the structure of the nervous system.
Synaptic plasticity: The capacity of connections between neurons to change their strength or function over time. Cajal proposed that changes in neural connections could underlie learning and adaptation.
Cell theory: The principle that living organisms are composed of cells, the basic structural units of life. Cajal extended this general principle to the nervous system, whose cellular organization was disputed.
Dendrite: A branching extension of a neuron that receives and integrates signals from other cells. Cajal described dendritic trees as receptive structures, helping define the direction of neural signaling.
