Saparmurat Niyazov

Saparmurat Niyazov was Turkmenistan’s authoritarian ruler from 1985 until his death in 2006. He adopted the title Turkmenbashi and declared himself president for life in 1999.

Turkmenbashi: Turkmenbashi, meaning “head of the Turkmen,” was the honorific title adopted by Saparmurat Niyazov. The title made his personal authority a defining symbol of the state.
