Sarah Winnemucca

Sarah Winnemucca (c. 1844–1891) was a Northern Paiute author, educator, interpreter, and advocate who campaigned for Indigenous rights in the nineteenth-century United States.

Chief Truckee: A Northern Paiute leader who supported cooperation with settlers and was Sarah Winnemucca’s grandfather. Her grandfather’s diplomacy shaped her early experience of relations between Paiute people and settlers.
Northern Paiute: An Indigenous people whose ancestral homelands include parts of present-day Nevada, Oregon, and California. Winnemucca’s identity and advocacy were rooted in her Northern Paiute community.
Life Among the Piutes: Sarah Winnemucca’s 1883 autobiography and history of Northern Paiute life and U.S. relations with Paiute people. It is her best-known work and a detailed record of her political arguments.

Elizabeth Peabody: An American educator and reformer who supported Sarah Winnemucca’s efforts to publish her account. Peabody helped bring Winnemucca’s writing to publication and a wider audience.
Malheur Reservation: A federal reservation established in eastern Oregon for Northern Paiute people in the 1870s. Winnemucca worked as an interpreter there and protested the conditions Paiute people faced.
