Sargassum

Sargassum is a genus of brown algae that includes species attached to coastal rocks and species that float freely in the open ocean. Its floating forms can gather into extensive surface mats.

Sargassum natans: A pelagic Sargassum species that floats freely in the Atlantic Ocean. This species is one of the principal forms found in the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt.
Sargassum compost: Composted seaweed material used to amend soil or supply nutrients. Composting is one proposed use for collected Sargassum, though salt and contaminants require attention.
Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt: A recurring, extensive band of floating Sargassum across the tropical Atlantic. This belt represents the open-ocean blooms most closely associated with Sargassum’s recent expansion.
