Saronic Islands

The Saronic Islands are a group of Greek islands in the Saronic Gulf, including Salamis, Aegina, Poros, Hydra, and Spetses.

Aegina: A Greek island in the Saronic Gulf, known for its ancient temple and pistachio cultivation. Its ancient sanctuary and port made Aegina a major center among the islands.
Saronic Gulf: A gulf of the Aegean Sea lying between Attica and the northeastern Peloponnese. The gulf defines the islands’ shared geographic setting.
Aristides: An Athenian statesman and general of the early fifth century BCE, remembered as Aristides the Just. Ancient tradition associates Aristides with organizing Aegina’s evacuation before the Battle of Salamis.
Piraeus: The port city of Athens and Greece’s largest passenger harbor. Ferries from Piraeus provide the main transport link between Athens and several Saronic Islands.
Cyclades: A group of Greek islands in the central Aegean Sea, arranged around Delos. The Cyclades are a larger, more dispersed island group east of the Saronic Gulf.
Hydra: A Greek island in the Saronic Gulf known for its preserved stone harbor town and maritime history. Hydra’s architecture and seafaring past set it apart from nearby islands.
Attica: A historical region of southeastern Greece that includes Athens and extends to the Saronic Gulf. Athens and the Attic coast have long shaped the islands’ links to the mainland.
Laskarina Bouboulina: A Greek naval commander and independence fighter who financed and led ships during the Greek War of Independence. Bouboulina’s home and naval base on Spetses made the island prominent in the independence struggle.
Ferry: A vessel that carries passengers, vehicles, or goods on regular water routes. Ferries connect the islands to one another and to mainland Greece.
Argolic Gulf: A gulf in the northeastern Peloponnese, south of the Saronic Gulf. The nearby Argolic Gulf has its own island and coastal geography beyond the Saronic group.
