Satrap

A satrap was a governor responsible for administering a province in an ancient empire. Satraps are especially associated with the Achaemenid Persian Empire.

Achaemenid Empire: The Persian empire founded by Cyrus the Great that ruled much of western and central Asia from the sixth to fourth centuries BCE. Satraps governed its provinces on behalf of the king.
Satrapy: A province governed by a satrap in an ancient empire, especially the Achaemenid Empire. It was the territorial unit a satrap administered.
Tissaphernes: A Persian satrap of Lydia and Caria who played a major role in late fifth-century BCE conflicts with Greek states. His diplomacy and military actions show a satrap operating beyond routine administration.
Roman Governor: An official appointed to govern a province of the Roman Empire or Roman Republic. Roman provincial government used different titles, institutions, and relationships to the center.
Royal Road: A major road system connecting parts of the Achaemenid Empire, notably the route between Sardis and Susa. Its couriers helped the king communicate with distant satraps.
Persepolis Administrative Archives: A collection of Achaemenid-period tablets documenting institutional transactions and movement of goods and people. The records illuminate provincial administration and the resources supporting royal institutions.
Pharnabazus: A Persian satrap of Hellespontine Phrygia active in the late fifth and early fourth centuries BCE. His dealings with Greek forces illustrate the political reach of a western satrap.
Egyptian Nomarch: A governor of a nome, the territorial division used in ancient Egypt. The nomarch was a comparable provincial official within a distinct administrative tradition.
Cyrus the Great: The founder of the Achaemenid Empire, who ruled Persia from about 559 to 530 BCE. His empire-building established the provinces later administered by satraps.
Tribute: A payment or transfer of goods made by a subordinate community to a ruler or state. Provincial revenues helped satraps meet obligations to the Persian king.
