Saturn V

The Saturn V was a three-stage American launch vehicle developed for NASA’s Apollo lunar missions and later used to place Skylab in orbit. It remains the tallest, heaviest, and most powerful rocket successfully flown.

F-1: The Saturn V’s first-stage engine, burning liquid oxygen and RP-1 kerosene. Five F-1 engines powered the first stage through the initial ascent.
Wernher von Braun: A German-American aerospace engineer who led the development of the Saturn launch vehicles. He directed the Marshall Space Flight Center team responsible for Saturn V development.
Apollo 8: The 1968 mission that first carried humans into orbit around the Moon. Its Saturn V launch enabled the first crewed lunar-orbit mission.
N1 (rocket): A Soviet super-heavy launch vehicle developed for crewed lunar missions but never successfully flown. The N1 was the Saturn V’s principal counterpart in the Soviet lunar effort.
Rocketdyne J-2: A liquid-hydrogen rocket engine used on the Saturn V’s upper stages. J-2 engines powered the second stage and restarted the third stage for translunar injection.
Marshall Space Flight Center: A NASA center in Huntsville, Alabama, specializing in propulsion and launch-vehicle development. Marshall managed Saturn V design, testing, and integration.
Apollo 11: The 1969 mission that landed the first humans on the Moon. A Saturn V launched the crew and spacecraft that achieved the first lunar landing.
Space Shuttle: NASA’s reusable crewed spacecraft system, flown from 1981 to 2011. It replaced Saturn V-era launch capabilities with a partially reusable architecture.
Saturn V instrument unit: The ring-shaped avionics section above the Saturn V’s third stage, containing guidance and control equipment. It guided the rocket’s powered flight and controlled stage events.
Apollo program: NASA’s human spaceflight program that landed astronauts on the Moon between 1969 and 1972. The Saturn V was built chiefly to carry Apollo crews and spacecraft to the Moon.
