Saudi unification

Saudi unification was the early twentieth-century process by which Ibn Saud and his allies conquered and consolidated much of the Arabian Peninsula, culminating in the founding of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932.

Emirate of Diriyah: The first Saudi state, founded in central Arabia in the eighteenth century and destroyed by Egyptian forces in 1818. Its destruction left a political legacy that later Saudi rulers sought to restore.
Capture of Riyadh: Ibn Saud’s 1902 seizure of Riyadh from the Rashidi Emirate. This small-scale raid launched the campaign to rebuild Saudi power.
Hussein bin Ali: The Hashemite ruler of the Hejaz who proclaimed himself king in 1916 and lost his kingdom to Ibn Saud. His defeat transferred the Hejaz from Hashemite to Saudi rule.
Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: A sovereign state established in 1932 under the rule of the House of Saud. Its proclamation formally named the state created through unification.
Emirate of Nejd: The second Saudi state, centered in central Arabia from 1824 until its collapse in 1891. Its fall preceded Ibn Saud’s return and the start of the third Saudi state.
Rashidi Emirate: A dynasty and state based in Ha’il that rivaled the Saudis for control of central and northern Arabia. Its defeat removed the principal regional rival to Saudi expansion.
Abdulaziz ibn Mutib Al Rashid: The Rashidi emir who ruled Ha’il and was killed fighting Ibn Saud’s forces in 1906. His death weakened the Rashidi dynasty during the struggle for central Arabia.
Treaty of Jeddah (1927): A 1927 agreement in which Britain recognized Ibn Saud’s independence and renounced claims to protect his territories. It gave international recognition to the growing Saudi state.
Battle of Mulayda: An 1891 battle in which forces of the Rashidi Emirate defeated the Saudis, helping end the second Saudi state. The defeat drove the Saudi family into exile in Kuwait.
Battle of Tarabah: A 1919 battle in which Saudi forces defeated the Hashemite army near Tarabah in western Arabia. The victory weakened Hashemite influence east of the Hejaz.
