Sauropod neck

A sauropod neck is the elongated cervical structure supporting the head in long-necked dinosaurs. Its length and construction varied among sauropod lineages and shaped how they fed.

Cervical vertebra: A vertebra in the neck, between the skull and the thoracic spine. Sauropod neck length came largely from numerous elongated cervical vertebrae.
Neck posture: The orientation of an animal’s neck relative to its body and the ground. Fossil anatomy and biomechanical models constrain possible sauropod neck positions.
Herbivory: A feeding strategy based primarily on consuming plants. Sauropod necks served animals that harvested vegetation rather than prey.
Brachiosaurus: A large Jurassic sauropod with forelimbs longer than its hindlimbs. Its elevated shoulders and long neck inspired interpretations of high browsing.

Diplodocus: A Late Jurassic sauropod with an exceptionally long, low-slung body and tail. Its relatively slender neck is central to debates about sauropod feeding posture.
Cervical rib: A rib attached to a cervical vertebra, often elongated in sauropods. Long cervical ribs reinforced the neck and could support associated soft tissues.
Muscle: Contractile tissue that generates force and movement in animals. Neck muscles moved the head and stabilized cervical joints.
