Saxon Switzerland

Saxon Switzerland is a sandstone mountainous region in southeastern Saxony, Germany, shaped by the Elbe River valley and famed for its dramatic rock formations.

Bastei: A rock formation and viewing area in Saxon Switzerland, connected by a stone bridge to the ruins of Neurathen Castle. Its bridge and towers make it the region’s most recognizable landmark.
Elbe Sandstone: A Cretaceous sandstone formation exposed across the Elbe valley in southeastern Germany and northern Bohemia. Its layered rock supplies the material from which the landscape is carved.
Saxon Switzerland National Park: A protected area in Saxony established in 1990 to conserve the region’s sandstone landscapes and ecosystems. It protects a substantial portion of the region’s distinctive terrain.
Cretaceous: A geologic period lasting from about 145 million to 66 million years ago, preceding the Paleogene. The sandstone underlying the region was deposited during this period.
Königstein Fortress: A hilltop fortress on a sandstone plateau above the Elbe River in Saxon Switzerland. The fortress crowns a plateau overlooking the region’s river valley.
Sandstone: A sedimentary rock made mainly of sand-sized mineral grains cemented together. Saxon Switzerland’s cliffs and pinnacles are sandstone landforms.
Bohemian Switzerland National Park: A protected sandstone landscape in northern Czechia, adjoining Saxon Switzerland across the national border. Together, the parks conserve connected sandstone landscapes on both sides of the border.
Elbe: A major Central European river flowing from the Czech Republic through Germany to the North Sea. Its valley is the region’s defining geographic corridor.
Schrammsteine: A group of rugged, narrow sandstone rock formations east of Bad Schandau. Their jagged ridges exemplify the area’s steep sandstone landscape.
Differential erosion: The uneven wearing away of rock layers or materials with different resistance to weathering and erosion. It helps leave resistant blocks standing while weaker rock is removed.
