Saxon Wars

The Saxon Wars were campaigns waged by Charlemagne from 772 to 804 to conquer the Saxons and impose Christianity in what is now northwestern Germany.

Charlemagne: King of the Franks and emperor who expanded Frankish power across much of western and central Europe. He directed the campaigns and made Saxon submission a condition of Frankish rule.
Saxons: A group of Germanic-speaking peoples who lived chiefly in northwestern Europe during antiquity and the early Middle Ages. They were the peoples Charlemagne sought to conquer and convert.
Alcuin: An English scholar and cleric who advised Charlemagne and promoted Christian learning in the Frankish realm. His letters criticized coercive conversion and questioned its spiritual effectiveness.
Duchy of Saxony: A medieval political territory in eastern Germany that emerged from the Saxon lands under Frankish and later German rule. Its later formation followed the incorporation of Saxon territories into the Frankish realm.
Capitulatio de partibus Saxoniae: A late eighth-century Frankish law code that prescribed severe penalties for practices resisting Christian rule in Saxony. Its penalties made religious conformity an instrument of conquest.
Frankish expansion: The growth of Frankish political and military power across western and central Europe during the early Middle Ages. The campaigns extended this expansion into Saxon territories.
Einhard: A Frankish courtier and biographer whose Life of Charlemagne recounts the Saxon campaigns. His account became a major narrative source for the wars.
Carolingian Empire: The empire ruled by Charlemagne and his successors across much of western and central Europe. The wars brought Saxony into this expanding political order.
Saxon Baptismal Vow: A ninth-century Latin formula requiring converts to renounce Saxon gods and affirm Christian beliefs. The vow shows how conversion was formalized after Saxony's subjugation.
Anglo-Saxon migration to Britain: The migration and settlement of Germanic groups in Britain during the fifth and sixth centuries. It concerns related Saxon peoples but a separate migration, not Charlemagne's wars.
