Scaffolding

Scaffolding is a temporary framework that supports workers and materials during construction, maintenance, or repair. It provides access to elevated work areas and is removed when the work is complete.

Standards (scaffolding): Vertical scaffold members that transfer loads to the ground or supporting structure. Standards form the vertical frame that carries loads through many scaffold designs.
Scaffold load: The weight and forces a scaffold must carry, including workers, materials, equipment, and environmental effects. The scaffold’s components must carry these forces without exceeding their capacity.
Tube and coupler scaffold: A scaffold assembled from tubes joined by couplers, allowing flexible configurations. Its adaptable geometry suits complex structures that fixed modular systems may not fit.
Aerial work platform: A powered or manually operated device that raises workers on a platform to an elevated work position. Unlike a scaffold, it carries workers on a movable platform rather than a built frame.
Ledgers (scaffolding): Horizontal scaffold members that connect standards along the length of a scaffold. Ledgers tie the standards together and support the scaffold’s working levels.
Scaffold foundation: The ground, footing, or supporting structure that receives loads from a scaffold. A stable base prevents settlement or movement from undermining the frame.
Frame scaffold: A scaffold built from prefabricated frames connected with braces and platforms. Its repeatable frames allow rapid assembly for common construction and repair tasks.
Ladder: A portable or fixed structure with rungs or steps used for climbing between levels. Ladders provide access with less setup but usually offer less room for sustained work and materials.
Transoms (scaffolding): Crosswise scaffold members that span between ledgers and support platforms. Transoms carry platform loads across the scaffold bay.
Scaffold bracing: Diagonal or other restraints that limit movement and stabilize a scaffold against lateral forces. Bracing helps the frame resist sway and instability.
