Schauder fixed-point theorem

The Schauder fixed-point theorem states that every continuous self-map of a nonempty compact convex subset of a Banach space has a fixed point.

Banach space: A complete normed vector space. The theorem places its compact convex domain inside this setting.
Brouwer fixed-point theorem: Every continuous self-map of a compact convex subset of finite-dimensional Euclidean space has a fixed point. Schauder’s theorem extends this finite-dimensional fixed-point principle.
Schauder–Tychonoff theorem: A fixed-point theorem for continuous self-maps of compact convex subsets of locally convex topological vector spaces. It generalizes Schauder’s result beyond Banach spaces.
Banach fixed-point theorem: A theorem guaranteeing a unique fixed point for a contraction on a complete metric space. Unlike Schauder’s theorem, it requires contraction but gives uniqueness and iterative convergence.
Compact space: A topological space in which every open cover has a finite subcover. Compactness supplies the finite approximation needed in the theorem’s proof.
Finite-rank operator: A linear operator whose range is finite-dimensional. Finite-dimensional approximations make Brouwer’s theorem applicable in the proof.
Hammerstein integral equation: A nonlinear integral equation whose operator combines a kernel with a nonlinear function. Compactness and continuity can let Schauder’s theorem establish a solution.
Kakutani fixed-point theorem: A fixed-point theorem for upper hemicontinuous correspondences with nonempty compact convex values. It handles set-valued maps, whereas Schauder’s theorem concerns continuous functions.
Convex set: A subset of a vector space containing every line segment between any two of its points. Convexity keeps finite-dimensional approximations inside the domain.
ε-net: A set of points whose ε-radius neighborhoods cover a metric space or subset. Finite nets support approximations of compact domains by finite-dimensional data.
