Schleswig-Holstein Question

The Schleswig-Holstein Question was a nineteenth-century dispute over the constitutional status, national affiliation, and succession of Schleswig and Holstein, two duchies linked to the Danish crown.

Duchy of Schleswig: A duchy between Denmark and Holstein, historically tied to the Danish crown but with a mixed Danish- and German-speaking population. Its uncertain constitutional relationship to Denmark made it the dispute’s central territory.
