Schmalkaldic War

The 1546–1547 conflict in the Holy Roman Empire in which Emperor Charles V defeated the Protestant Schmalkaldic League. Its outcome briefly strengthened imperial authority and Catholic power in Germany.

Schmalkaldic League: An alliance of Protestant princes and cities in the Holy Roman Empire, formed in 1531 to defend their religious and political interests. The League was the war’s principal opponent and its defeat ended organized resistance to Charles V.
Diet of Augsburg (1530): An imperial assembly at which Protestant princes presented the Augsburg Confession to Charles V. The failure to reconcile the confessions sharpened the dispute preceding the war.
Augsburg Interim: A 1548 imperial decree that imposed a provisional religious settlement on Protestant territories while a general council was awaited. Charles tried to convert military victory into religious conformity through this contested decree.
Thirty Years' War: A series of conflicts fought in the Holy Roman Empire and neighboring territories from 1618 to 1648. Unlike this brief war, it became a prolonged European conflict rooted partly in unresolved confessional tensions.
Battle of Mühlberg: A 1547 battle in which Charles V’s forces defeated the Schmalkaldic League’s army on the Elbe River. The victory captured Elector John Frederick and effectively broke the League’s military power.
Augsburg Confession: A 1530 statement of Lutheran belief presented to Charles V at the Diet of Augsburg. Its presentation crystallized a confessional division the emperor sought to overcome.
Maurice's Revolt: A 1552 uprising led by Maurice of Saxony against Charles V, which forced the emperor to negotiate with Protestant princes. The revolt overturned the emperor’s postwar religious settlement and exposed the limits of his victory.
Schmalkaldic War (Second): The 1552 revolt against Charles V by Maurice of Saxony and allied German princes, often called the Second Schmalkaldic War. It reversed the first war’s imperial gains rather than ending Protestant political resistance.
Charles V: Holy Roman Emperor from 1519 to 1556, whose extensive European territories made him a leading ruler of the sixteenth century. His campaign sought to restore imperial authority and contain Protestant resistance.
Peace of Nuremberg: A 1532 agreement that temporarily suspended legal action against Protestant estates in the Holy Roman Empire. Its temporary truce postponed, rather than settled, the confrontation that erupted in 1546.
