Schnapsen

Schnapsen is a two-player trick-taking card game, usually played with a 20-card deck. Players score points by winning tricks and declaring marriages, and each hand ends when a player claims enough points.

Trick-taking game: A card game in which players contribute cards to successive contests called tricks, usually following the led suit. Schnapsen's central contest is winning tricks with rank and trump rules.
French-suited playing cards: A standard playing-card design using hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades, with ranks such as ace, king, queen, and jack. Many Schnapsen sets use these suits, though German-suited cards are also common.
Card counting: Tracking cards already played to infer which cards remain unseen. Remembering played trumps and high cards improves Schnapsen decisions after the stock closes.
Bézique: A two-player card game using a 32-card deck, with tricks and melds including the queen of spades and jack of diamonds. Bézique shares trick-taking and melds but uses a different deck and scoring system.
Trump (cards): A designated suit whose cards can outrank cards of other suits in a trick-taking game. Schnapsen's trump suit can turn a low card into a trick-winning play.
Bavarian pattern: A traditional German-suited playing-card design featuring acorns, leaves, hearts, and bells. Bavarian-pattern cards provide a regional alternative to French suits for Schnapsen.
Perfect information: A game condition in which every player can observe the complete state, including all positions and available actions. Schnapsen begins with hidden hands and stock, so players must act under incomplete information.
Pinochle: A trick-taking and melding card game traditionally played with a 48-card deck containing two copies of each card from nine to ace. Pinochle has a larger duplicated deck and more elaborate meld scoring than Schnapsen.
Talón: The face-down stock of undealt cards used in several European card games. While the stock remains open, players replenish their hands after tricks.
Sixty-six (card game): A two-player trick-taking game in which players seek to reach 66 card points, using a 24-card deck. Its scoring target and rules are closely related to Schnapsen, but it uses a larger deck.
