Knowra Schutzstaffel Schutzstaffel The Schutzstaffel (SS) was a Nazi paramilitary organization that became central to racial persecution, the Holocaust, and the administration of concentration and extermination camps.
SS Main Office : A central SS agency responsible for recruitment, training, administration, and ideological education. It managed the organization’s personnel and helped standardize SS training.
Sturmabteilung : The Nazi Party’s original paramilitary organization, known as the SA or Brownshirts. The SS began within the SA before becoming a rival and eventually eclipsing it.
The Holocaust : The genocide in which Nazi Germany and its collaborators murdered six million European Jews during World War II. The SS organized and carried out major parts of the genocide.
Gestapo : Nazi Germany’s secret state police, which used surveillance, interrogation, and imprisonment to suppress opposition. The Gestapo was a police agency under SS leadership, not the SS as a whole.
Reich Security Main Office : A Nazi agency formed in 1939 by merging the Security Police with the SD. It coordinated intelligence, policing, deportations, and mass murder in occupied Europe.
Adolf Hitler : The leader of the Nazi Party and dictator of Germany from 1933 to 1945. Hitler made the SS his personal guard and later empowered it as a regime instrument.
Operation Reinhard : The Nazi operation that murdered approximately 1.7 million Jews in occupied Poland, chiefly at three extermination camps. SS and police personnel organized the operation and ran its killing centers.
German Army : Germany’s regular armed forces, known as the Wehrmacht, during the Nazi era and World War II. The Wehrmacht and Waffen-SS were separate forces, though they fought alongside each other.
Einsatzgruppen : Mobile SS and police units that carried out mass shootings and other killings, especially in Eastern Europe. These units conducted mass murder during the invasion of the Soviet Union.
Heinrich Himmler : The Nazi leader who headed the SS from 1929 and oversaw its expansion into a vast state apparatus. His leadership transformed a small organization into a principal instrument of Nazi rule.
