Sciuridae

Sciuridae is a family of rodents that includes squirrels, chipmunks, marmots, and prairie dogs. Its members range from tree-dwelling gliders to burrowing, social ground species.

Rodentia: Rodentia is the mammalian order characterized by a pair of ever-growing incisors in each jaw. Sciuridae is one of the many families within this order.
Arboreal locomotion: Arboreal locomotion is movement through trees using branches, trunks, and other elevated supports. Tree squirrels use this movement to forage and escape predators.
Seed dispersal: Seed dispersal is the movement of seeds away from their parent plants. Forgotten squirrel caches can transport and establish tree seeds.
Beaver: Beavers are large, semiaquatic rodents in the family Castoridae. Like sciurids, they are rodents, but belong to a separate family and specialize in aquatic habitats.
Sciuromorpha: Sciuromorpha is a rodent suborder that includes squirrels and several related families. This grouping places squirrels among their closer rodent relatives.
Gliding flight: Gliding flight is controlled descent through air without powered flapping or sustained lift. Flying squirrels reach distant trees using membranes stretched between their limbs.
Mycorrhizal fungi: Mycorrhizal fungi form nutrient-exchanging associations with plant roots. Some squirrels disperse underground fungal spores while digging and feeding.
Dormouse: Dormice are small rodents in the family Gliridae, many of which hibernate. Their hibernation resembles that of some sciurids, despite their separate family placement.
Incisor: An incisor is a front tooth adapted for cutting or gnawing. Like other rodents, sciurids gnaw with continuously growing incisors.
Hibernation: Hibernation is a prolonged seasonal state of reduced metabolism and body temperature. Some marmots and ground squirrels survive winter by sharply reducing activity.
