Scotia Plate

The Scotia Plate is a small tectonic plate beneath the Scotia Sea, between the South American and Antarctic plates. Its complex boundaries include subduction zones, transform faults, and spreading ridges.

South Scotia Ridge: A tectonic boundary between the Scotia and Antarctic plates south of the Scotia Sea. Its transform faults accommodate motion along the plate’s southern edge.
South American Plate: A major tectonic plate carrying most of South America and adjacent Atlantic seafloor. It borders the Scotia Plate to the north and west.
Gondwana: An ancient supercontinent that included South America, Antarctica, Africa, Australia, and India. The Scotia region developed as Gondwana fragmented and its southern continents separated.
Antarctic Circumpolar Current: A powerful eastward ocean current that circles Antarctica through the Southern Ocean. The opening of Drake Passage, tied to regional tectonics, enabled its uninterrupted flow.
