Scree

Scree is a slope or accumulation of loose, angular rock fragments, usually formed by weathering and rockfall at the base of a cliff.

Frost wedging: Rock fracture caused when water enters cracks, freezes, and expands. Repeated freezing can break cliff faces into fragments that accumulate as scree.
Physical weathering: The breakdown of rock into smaller pieces without changing its chemical composition. It supplies the fragments that make up most scree.
Rockfall hazard: The risk of injury or damage from rocks falling or bouncing downslope. Active scree slopes can signal continuing rockfall and unstable cliffs.
Boulder field: An area covered by scattered or densely packed large boulders. A boulder field lacks the characteristic slope-shaped accumulation of scree.
Rockfall: The rapid detachment and descent of rock from a steep slope or cliff. Falling blocks supply much of the debris at a cliff’s base.
Mass wasting: The downslope movement of rock and soil under gravity. Scree formation belongs to this broader family of slope processes.
Rockfall barrier: A structure designed to intercept falling rocks before they reach people or infrastructure. Barriers are installed where rockfall from scree-producing cliffs threatens roads or buildings.
Blockfield: A surface mantle of angular rock blocks, often formed in place by weathering. Blockfields commonly cover uplands rather than collecting beneath cliffs.
Talus cone: A cone-shaped accumulation of rock fragments beneath a gully or narrow cliff face. Scree carried down a confined channel can build this distinctive landform.
Colluvium: Loose sediment accumulated at the base of a slope through gravity-driven movement. Colluvium includes finer and more mixed deposits than the typically coarse, angular scree.
