Screen printing

Screen printing is a printing method that pushes ink through selected openings in a mesh screen onto a surface. A stencil blocks other openings, controlling where the ink lands.

Screen-printing stencil: A patterned barrier that blocks ink from passing through selected parts of a screen. Its open and blocked areas define the image transferred in each print.
Textile printing: The application of color or patterns to fabrics using printing processes. Screen printing is widely used to decorate fabric and garments.
Offset printing: A printing process that transfers ink from a plate to a rubber blanket and then to a substrate. Unlike screen printing, it transfers images through an intermediate blanket rather than mesh openings.
Pochoir: A stencil-based coloring technique used to apply paint or ink through cut patterns. It shares screen printing's basic principle of selectively blocking color.
Stencil: A thin template that controls where paint, ink, or another material can be applied. The screen-printing stencil is one instance of this general image-making tool.
Squeegee: A flexible blade used to push liquid or ink across a surface. A squeegee drives ink through the stencil's open mesh.
Printed T-shirt: A T-shirt bearing a design applied through a printing or decoration process. It is a familiar example of screen printing on apparel.
Digital printing: Printing that transfers images from digital data without conventional image-bearing plates or screens. It avoids screen preparation and can vary each impression directly from digital data.
Serigraphy: A term for screen printing, especially when emphasizing its use as a fine-art printmaking process. The name distinguishes artistic screen printing from purely commercial production.
Mesh: A network of interlaced fibers or wires forming a regular array of openings. A screen's mesh provides the permeable support through which ink is forced.
