Scute

A scute is a keratinous plate covering part of the shell or skin in turtles and other reptiles. Turtle shell scutes overlap underlying bone but are not themselves bone.

Turtle shell: The protective structure formed from fused bones and overlying tissues in turtles. Scutes cover the shell’s bony surface without forming its underlying structure.
Turtle shell development: The process by which a turtle’s shell forms from specialized bones and surrounding tissues. Shell development positions scutes over the growing bony shell.
Marginal scutes: The scutes lining the outer edge of a turtle’s carapace. They form the visible border around the upper shell.
Turtle identification: The recognition of turtle species or individuals from morphological and other traits. Scute counts, shapes, and arrangement help identify many turtle species.
Keratin: A durable structural protein found in hair, nails, feathers, and reptile scales. Scutes consist of keratin, the same structural material found in reptile scales.
Ecdysis: The periodic shedding of an animal’s outer skin or covering. Some turtles shed outer scute layers as part of normal growth.
Vertebral scutes: A row of scutes running along the midline of a turtle’s carapace. Their number and shape are commonly used in describing turtle shells.
Sea turtle conservation: The protection and recovery of sea turtle populations and their habitats. Scute condition and markings can support monitoring of individual sea turtles.
Epidermis: The outermost layer of skin in animals. Scutes develop from the epidermis rather than from the shell’s bone.
Scute growth rings: Concentric ridges or growth layers visible on some turtle scutes. Their visible layers reflect growth, though they do not reliably reveal age.
