Scythians

The Scythians were Iranian-speaking nomadic peoples of the Eurasian steppe, especially north of the Black Sea, from roughly the ninth to the first centuries BCE. They were known for mounted warfare, animal-style art, and burial mounds.

Eurasian Steppe: A vast grassland belt extending across Eurasia from Eastern Europe to Mongolia. Its open pastures supported the horse-based mobility that shaped Scythian life.
Mounted archery: The practice of shooting a bow while riding a horse. Scythian forces could attack at range while moving rapidly across open terrain.
Herodotus: A fifth-century BCE Greek historian whose Histories describe peoples and conflicts around the Mediterranean and Black Sea. His account is the fullest surviving ancient narrative of Scythian customs and history.
Kul-Oba: A fourth-century BCE Scythian royal burial mound near Kerch in Crimea. Its rich grave goods illuminate elite life and Greek-Scythian connections.
Sarmatians: Iranian-speaking nomadic peoples who became prominent on the western Eurasian steppe after the Scythians. Their rise shifted steppe power and replaced Scythian groups in parts of the Black Sea region.
Iranian languages: A branch of the Indo-Iranian languages, including Persian, Kurdish, and Ossetian. Scythian languages belonged to this branch, linking the peoples to a wider linguistic family.
Composite bow: A bow made from layers of materials such as wood, horn, and sinew. Its compact size and power suited Scythian horse archers.
Scythian migration: The movement of Scythian groups across western and central Eurasia in antiquity. Migration stories help explain how Scythian groups entered the Black Sea region.
Solokha kurgan: A Scythian burial mound in present-day Ukraine containing elaborate weapons and gold objects. Its finds document the wealth and ceremonial equipment of Scythian rulers.
Ossetians: An Iranian-speaking people of the Caucasus whose language descends from Alanic. Ossetian preserves a later Iranian steppe language, though a direct Scythian identity is not established.
