Sea Peoples

Sea Peoples is the modern name for groups described in Egyptian records as attacking the eastern Mediterranean around the end of the Late Bronze Age. Their identities, origins, and relationship to the region’s political collapse remain disputed.

Medinet Habu: A mortuary temple at Thebes whose reliefs and inscriptions record the reign of Ramesses III. Its inscriptions provide the fullest Egyptian account of conflicts involving the Sea Peoples.
Battle of the Delta: A naval and land battle between Egypt and invading forces during the reign of Ramesses III. Reliefs at Medinet Habu portray this confrontation as a decisive defense against seaborne attackers.
Late Bronze Age collapse: The breakdown of several eastern Mediterranean states and trade networks around the end of the thirteenth and beginning of the twelfth centuries BCE. The Sea Peoples appear in accounts of this wider crisis, though they do not explain it alone.
Migration Period: A period of population movements across Europe, especially from the fourth through sixth centuries CE. It is a later, distinct episode sometimes loosely compared with Bronze Age movements.
Ramesses III: An Egyptian pharaoh of the Twentieth Dynasty who ruled in the early twelfth century BCE. His reign’s records describe battles against groups identified with the Sea Peoples.
Medinet Habu inscriptions: Royal texts and reliefs at Medinet Habu commemorating Ramesses III’s campaigns. Their account is the central source for how Egypt represented the conflict.
Late Bronze Age: A period of the eastern Mediterranean and Near East from roughly 1550 to 1200 BCE. The conflicts associated with the Sea Peoples occurred as this era gave way to the Iron Age.
Dorian invasion: A traditional ancient Greek explanation for the arrival of Dorian-speaking peoples in the Peloponnese. It offers a separate tradition of population movement sometimes folded into narratives of the Bronze Age collapse.
Peleset: A people named in Egyptian inscriptions as among the groups fought by Ramesses III. They are often connected with the later Philistines, though the identification is not certain.
Egyptian naval warfare: The use of ships, crews, and tactics by ancient Egypt in military operations on waterways and coasts. The Battle of the Delta account emphasizes Egypt’s use of river geography against enemy ships.
