Hafgufa : A monstrous sea creature described in medieval Scandinavian texts as capable of luring or swallowing prey. This Norse sea monster is sometimes linked to later accounts of enormous creatures at sea.
Basking shark : A large filter-feeding shark found in temperate seas, sometimes reaching more than ten metres in length. A decomposing basking shark can lose its familiar shape and resemble a long-necked monster.
Scandinavian folklore : The traditional stories, beliefs, and customs of the peoples of Scandinavia. Its sea monsters, including Hafgufa, helped shape northern European ideas of enormous creatures offshore.
Marine reptile : A reptile adapted to live in marine environments, including extinct groups such as plesiosaurs and mosasaurs. Fossil marine reptiles are sometimes invoked as explanations, but their lineages went extinct long before modern sightings.
Sea monk : A fishlike or humanlike marine monster reported in European accounts from the Middle Ages onward. Its reported appearance shows how unfamiliar marine animals could be interpreted as monsters.
Oarfish : A very long, ribbon-shaped deep-sea fish with a dorsal fin running along most of its body. Its great length and unusual surface appearances offer a plausible source for some serpentlike reports.
Leviathan : A colossal sea creature in biblical texts, later used as an image of overwhelming power and chaos. This influential monster tradition provided a broad cultural model for fearsome beings of the deep.
Plesiosaur : An extinct marine reptile with a broad body, four flippers, and usually a long neck. Its silhouette resembles some sea-serpent descriptions, though plesiosaurs disappeared millions of years ago.
Cadborosaurus : A cryptid said to inhabit the Pacific coast of North America, often described as long-necked and serpentine. This modern regional cryptid is one of the best-known sea-serpent claims.
Giant squid : A deep-sea cephalopod that can grow to several metres in body length and has long arms. Long arms and rare encounters can contribute to uncertain accounts of large marine creatures.
