Second Anglo-Afghan War

The Second Anglo-Afghan War was an 1878–1880 conflict between Britain and Afghanistan. It ended with British control over Afghanistan’s foreign relations and Abdur Rahman Khan’s accession as emir.

Treaty of Gandamak: The 1879 treaty that ended the first phase of the war and placed Afghanistan’s foreign relations under British control. It formalized British influence after the occupation of Kabul.
Treaty of Peshawar (1873): An agreement between British India and Afghanistan that affirmed the Afghan ruler’s position but left disputes unresolved. Its unresolved tensions formed part of the strained diplomacy before the invasion.
Abdur Rahman Khan: The Afghan emir from 1880 to 1901, who consolidated central authority while ceding control of foreign relations to Britain. His accession supplied the political settlement Britain sought at the war’s end.
Durand Line: The 1893 boundary agreement between British India and Afghanistan, negotiated by Mortimer Durand and Abdur Rahman Khan. It later fixed a contested frontier under the foreign-policy arrangement established after the war.
Battle of Maiwand: An 1880 Afghan victory over a British-Indian force near Kandahar. Its defeat of a British column prompted the decisive campaign to relieve Kandahar.
Russian mission to Kabul (1878): A Russian diplomatic mission received by Sher Ali Khan in Kabul in 1878. Britain treated the mission as evidence of growing Russian influence at its frontier.
Yakub Khan: The Afghan emir who signed the Treaty of Gandamak in 1879 and abdicated after the Kabul uprising. His brief rule linked the treaty settlement to the renewed fighting.
