Second Barbary War

The 1815 U.S. naval conflict with Algiers ended in a treaty that ended American tribute payments and secured the release of American captives.

Stephen Decatur: A U.S. Navy officer who commanded the squadron sent to Algiers in 1815. His squadron captured Algerian ships and compelled negotiations.
First Barbary War: The 1801–1805 U.S. conflict with Tripoli over attacks on American shipping and tribute demands. Its settlement left U.S. relations with other Barbary states unresolved.
Treaty of Tripoli (1796): A treaty between the United States and Tripoli that addressed tribute, peace, and American shipping. Its negotiated settlement contrasts with the military pressure used against Algiers in 1815.
