Second Barons' War

The Second Barons' War was an English civil war fought from 1264 to 1267 between Henry III’s royal forces and rebellious barons led by Simon de Montfort.

Battle of Lewes: A 1264 battle in which Simon de Montfort’s forces defeated and captured Henry III and Prince Edward. The victory gave de Montfort control of the king and the government.
Simon de Montfort, 6th Earl of Leicester: An English magnate who led the baronial opposition and governed in the king’s name after Lewes. His leadership unified the rebels and made him the war’s central political figure.
Provisions of Westminster: A 1259 reform program that extended baronial oversight to local administration and royal officers. These reforms deepened the disputes over how far the crown should accept constraints.
Montfort's Parliament: A 1265 English parliament summoned by Simon de Montfort that included representatives from boroughs as well as counties. It broadened representation during de Montfort’s brief period of rule.
Battle of Evesham: A 1265 battle in which Prince Edward’s forces defeated and killed Simon de Montfort. De Montfort’s defeat broke the rebel regime but did not immediately end the war.
Henry III of England: King of England from 1216 to 1272, whose rule faced repeated disputes with the barons. The conflict began over resistance to his government and ended under his restored authority.
Magna Carta: A 1215 charter that limited certain royal powers and became a lasting reference point in English political disputes. Baronial opposition drew on an older tradition of demanding limits on royal government.

Siege of Kenilworth: A long royalist siege of Kenilworth Castle in 1266 that ended with the surrender of rebel strongholds. Its negotiated settlement helped bring the remaining organized resistance to an end.
Edward I of England: King of England from 1272 to 1307, known before his accession as Prince Edward. His escape from rebel custody and victory at Evesham reversed the war’s direction.
