Second Battle of Kharkov

A major World War II battle fought near Kharkov, Ukraine, in May 1942, in which German forces encircled and defeated a Soviet offensive.

Barvenkovo salient: A Soviet-held bulge south of Kharkov that German forces attacked during the May 1942 battle. The salient became the vulnerable base of the Soviet offensive and the site of the German encirclement.
First Battle of Kharkov: A battle in October 1941 in which German forces captured Kharkov from Soviet defenders. The Soviet May offensive sought to recover the city lost in this earlier battle.
