Second Chechen War

An armed conflict between Russia and Chechen separatists that began with Russia’s 1999 invasion of Chechnya and ended with the defeat of the separatist insurgency.

1999 Russian invasion of Chechnya: A Russian military campaign that began in September 1999 to reestablish federal control over Chechnya. It opened the war with a ground offensive after months of air strikes.
First Chechen War: The 1994–1996 war between Russia and Chechen separatists that ended with a de facto Chechen independence arrangement. Its inconclusive settlement left Chechnya’s status unresolved and shaped the next conflict.
Aslan Maskhadov: A Chechen military commander elected president of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in 1997. As the separatist president, he sought to preserve independence while insurgent factions gained influence.
