Second Crusade

The Second Crusade was a campaign launched in 1147 after the fall of Edessa, called by Pope Eugene III to defend the Crusader states. Its armies failed to capture Damascus and withdrew in 1148.

Fall of Edessa: The 1144 capture of the Crusader County of Edessa by forces of Zengi. Its loss prompted the campaign Eugene III called to protect the remaining Crusader states.
Pope Eugene III: The pope who issued the bull calling for the Second Crusade in 1145. His call transformed the fall of Edessa into a European-wide crusading campaign.
