Second Great Awakening

The Second Great Awakening was a Protestant revival movement in the United States that began around 1790 and peaked in the 1820s and 1830s. It promoted mass conversion and helped inspire social reform.

Camp meeting: A large outdoor religious gathering featuring preaching, prayer, singing, and communal worship. These extended gatherings drew converts from scattered settlements into revival communities.
Cane Ridge Revival: A major 1801 frontier revival in Kentucky, known for its large crowds and emotional religious meetings. It became an early landmark of the movement’s camp-meeting style.
Abolitionism in the United States: The movement to end slavery in the United States, pursued through moral, political, and sometimes religious activism. Revivalist ideas about sin and moral responsibility strengthened antislavery organizing.
Lyman Beecher: An American Congregationalist minister and reformer who became a prominent advocate of evangelical revival and temperance. His preaching and institution-building linked revivalism with organized reform.
Disestablishment in the United States: The removal of government support and legal privilege from established churches in the United States. A competitive religious landscape helped evangelical denominations grow without a national church.
Charles Grandison Finney: An American revivalist preacher and reformer who led prominent revivals in the 1820s and 1830s. His persuasive preaching and deliberate revival methods helped shape urban revivalism.
Burned-over district: A region of western New York marked by repeated religious revivals and reform movements in the early nineteenth century. Repeated revival activity made this region a center of the movement’s later phase.
Temperance movement: A social movement that sought to reduce or prohibit alcohol consumption. Evangelical reformers treated drinking as a preventable sin and a threat to families.
Asahel Nettleton: An American Congregationalist evangelist known for leading revivals in New England during the early nineteenth century. His revival work represents a more cautious approach than Finney’s New Measures.
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: A Christian restorationist church founded by Joseph Smith in 1830. Its founding emerged amid the intense religious experimentation of the revival era.
