Second Messenian War

A revolt by the Messenians against Spartan rule, traditionally dated to the seventh century BCE and ending in Sparta’s victory.

First Messenian War: A war in which Sparta conquered Messenia, traditionally dated to the eighth century BCE. The earlier conquest created the Spartan rule that the later revolt challenged.
Aristomenes: A Messenian leader in the Second Messenian War, celebrated in later Greek tradition. He became the revolt’s best-known hero, though accounts of his life are legendary.
Sparta: An ancient Greek city-state in the Peloponnese, renowned for its military-centered political order. Sparta’s victory preserved its control over Messenia and strengthened its dependence on helot labor.
