Secondary prevention

Secondary prevention comprises measures taken after a disease has occurred to detect it early, limit its progression, and prevent recurrence or complications.

Cardiac rehabilitation: A supervised program of exercise, education, and risk-factor management for people recovering from heart disease. It reduces further cardiac risk after a heart attack or other diagnosed heart condition.
Disease: A harmful disturbance of normal structure or function in an organism. Secondary prevention starts once a disease is present or has been diagnosed.
Primary prevention: Measures taken before a disease occurs to reduce its incidence. It acts before onset, unlike secondary prevention, which follows disease occurrence.
Disease surveillance: Ongoing collection and analysis of health data to guide public health action. Surveillance detects patterns that can prompt timely action after disease appears.
Morbidity: Illness, disease, or the burden of living with a health condition in a population. Reducing illness burden is a major outcome of detecting and treating disease early.
Cervical cancer screening: Testing for precancerous cervical changes or cervical cancer in people without symptoms. It detects disease early enough for treatment to prevent progression.
Early diagnosis: Identifying a disease at an early stage, before it causes substantial harm. Earlier recognition creates an opportunity to limit progression and complications.
Tertiary prevention: Measures that reduce disability and improve function after established disease has caused lasting effects. It focuses on limiting long-term consequences, while secondary prevention also targets early progression and recurrence.
Adherence (medicine): The extent to which a person's actions follow an agreed treatment plan. Following prescribed care helps sustain protection against progression or recurrence.
Mortality rate: The frequency of deaths in a population during a specified period. Effective measures can reduce deaths by interrupting progression after disease begins.
