Secondhand smoke

Secondhand smoke is the mixture of smoke released by burning tobacco products and smoke exhaled by smokers. It contains toxic chemicals and can harm people who breathe it.

Sidestream smoke: Smoke emitted from the burning end of a cigarette, cigar, or pipe. This is the smoke that enters the air directly from a smoldering tobacco product.
Coronary heart disease: A disease in which narrowed or blocked coronary arteries reduce blood flow to the heart. Secondhand smoke exposure increases the risk of coronary heart disease in nonsmokers.
Smoke-free policy: A rule that prohibits smoking in specified spaces to protect people from tobacco smoke exposure. Smoke-free policies prevent secondhand smoke exposure in shared indoor environments.
Doll and Hill study: A landmark British study that linked cigarette smoking with lung cancer in the 1950s. Evidence about active smoking helped establish the health context for later secondhand-smoke research.
Active smoking: The deliberate inhalation of smoke from a burning tobacco product. Active smoking involves direct use, while secondhand smoke exposure is involuntary inhalation from others' smoking.
Mainstream smoke: Smoke drawn through a tobacco product and inhaled by a smoker. After exhalation, this smoke becomes part of the mixture others breathe.
Lung cancer: Cancer that begins in the lungs, most often in cells lining the airways. Long-term secondhand smoke exposure is an established cause of lung cancer.
Ventilation (architecture): The controlled movement of outdoor and indoor air through a building. Ventilation can dilute smoke but does not reliably eliminate exposure in indoor spaces.
National Research Council report on environmental tobacco smoke: A 1986 US report reviewing health effects associated with environmental tobacco smoke. It synthesized evidence that nonsmokers exposed at home faced increased lung-cancer risk.
Electronic cigarette aerosol: An airborne mixture produced when an electronic cigarette heats liquid for inhalation. It is not tobacco smoke from combustion, though it can contain harmful substances.
