Secular music

Secular music is music not primarily intended for religious worship or ritual. It includes music made for entertainment, dance, storytelling, ceremony, and other nonreligious purposes.

Dance music: Music composed or performed to accompany dancing. Dance is one of secular music’s oldest and most widespread social uses.
Medieval music: Music produced in Europe during the Middle Ages, roughly from the fifth to fifteenth centuries. Medieval Europe developed distinct traditions of courtly and popular music alongside church music.
Sacred music: Music intended for religious worship, devotion, or ritual. Its purpose provides the clearest contrast with music not primarily made for worship.
Liturgical music: Music written or used as part of a formal religious service. Liturgical function marks a specific religious use that secular music does not have.
Popular music: Commercially distributed music intended for broad audiences, often shaped by mass media and changing styles. Modern secular music reaches large audiences through popular genres and recording industries.
Troubadour: A medieval poet-composer, especially in southern France, who wrote and performed songs in Occitan. Troubadours made courtly love song a prominent secular art in medieval Europe.
Music genre: A category of music characterized by shared conventions, styles, or social functions. Secular music is a purpose-based distinction that can include many genres.
Devotional music: Music intended to express or encourage personal religious devotion. A song can be outside formal worship yet still have a religious purpose.
Film music: Music composed or selected to accompany motion pictures. Secular compositions often serve storytelling and emotional effects in cinema.
Minnesang: A tradition of medieval German lyric poetry and song, especially courtly love poetry. It shows how secular song developed within German-speaking aristocratic courts.
