Seed drill

A machine that sows seeds in rows at controlled depths and spacing, often covering them with soil as it moves.

Seed metering: The controlled release of individual seeds or measured seed quantities from a sowing machine. The metering system regulates how many seeds the drill releases along each row.
Jethro Tull: An English agricultural innovator associated with the early eighteenth-century seed drill and horse hoe. Tull promoted row sowing and mechanical drilling as alternatives to broadcasting seed.
No-till farming: A farming system that grows crops without routinely plowing or disturbing the soil. Specialized drills place seed through crop residue while minimizing soil disturbance.

Precision planter: A machine that places seeds individually at controlled spacing, commonly for crops such as maize. Planters meter individual seeds more precisely than many drills designed for dense sowing.
Coulter: A cutting tool that opens soil ahead of a planting or tillage implement. Coulters help the drill cut through residue and open seed furrows.
Agricultural Revolution: A period of major changes in farming practices, productivity, and land use, especially in Britain from the seventeenth century onward. Seed drills formed part of broader efforts to raise agricultural productivity.
