Sefirot

The ten divine attributes or emanations through which God is understood to manifest and interact with creation in Jewish Kabbalah. They form an ordered structure used to describe divine activity and the soul’s spiritual life.

Kabbalah: A Jewish mystical tradition concerned with the nature of God, creation, scripture, and spiritual practice. The sefirot are a central framework within this broader Jewish mystical tradition.
Keter: The highest sefirah, associated with divine will and the first emergence of manifestation. It marks the uppermost point in the traditional ordering of the ten sefirot.
Isaac the Blind: A Provençal Jewish mystic of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries associated with early Kabbalah. His circle helped develop the sefirot as a structured account of divine manifestation.
Tikkun olam: A Jewish concept of repairing or improving the world, with meanings that vary across historical contexts. In Lurianic Kabbalah, human actions participate in restoring disrupted divine order.
Sefer Yetzirah: An early Jewish mystical text that describes creation through Hebrew letters and numbers. Its account of ten primordial numbers helped shape later language about divine emanations.
Chokhmah: The sefirah associated with wisdom and the first flash of creative insight. Its movement toward Binah begins the articulation of divine understanding.
Azriel of Gerona: A thirteenth-century Catalan Kabbalist who wrote influential explanations of the sefirot. His writings offered systematic accounts of how the sefirot relate to the unknowable divine.
Kavvanah: Intentional focus or spiritual direction in Jewish prayer and religious practice. Kabbalistic prayer uses focused intention to direct devotion through sefirotic symbolism.
Sefer ha-Bahir: A medieval Jewish mystical work that presents symbolic teachings later developed in Kabbalah. It is among the earliest texts to portray divine attributes in imagery that anticipates the sefirot.
Binah: The sefirah associated with understanding, discernment, and the development of ideas. It gives form and distinction to the insight associated with Chokhmah.
