Seijun Suzuki

Seijun Suzuki (1923–2017) was a Japanese film director whose bold compositions, abrupt editing, and playful genre disruptions shaped distinctive crime films, including Tokyo Drifter and Branded to Kill.

Branded to Kill: A 1967 Japanese crime film directed by Seijun Suzuki, following a hitman whose standing collapses after a failed job. Its fractured storytelling and surreal images became the clearest expression of Suzuki’s style.
Japanese New Wave: A loose movement of postwar Japanese filmmakers who challenged studio conventions and explored social and formal experimentation. Suzuki’s disruptive style overlapped with the period’s challenge to established filmmaking conventions.
