Seine fishing

Seine fishing uses a long net to encircle or intercept fish, then closes or hauls the net to concentrate and capture them.

Purse seining: A seine-fishing method in which a vessel encircles a school and closes the net’s bottom with a purse line. Closing the net beneath the fish is the defining mechanism of this vessel-based seine method.
Tuna fishing: The capture of tuna using methods including purse seining, longlining, and pole-and-line fishing. Purse seines are widely used to catch schooling tuna.
Trawling: Fishing by towing a net through water or along the seabed. A trawl captures fish by towing, whereas a seine is set around fish or hauled from a fixed position.
Dolphin-safe label: A label indicating that tuna was caught under standards intended to limit dolphin mortality. The label arose partly from concern about dolphins encircled during tuna purse-seine fishing.
Beach seining: A method that sets a seine from shore or a small boat and hauls both ends onto a beach. It uses the shoreline as the place where the encircling net is brought in.
Herring fishery: Commercial fishing for herring, a schooling fish caught with nets and other gear. Herring schools can be surrounded and captured efficiently with a seine.
Gillnetting: Fishing with a net that catches fish when they become entangled or trapped by their gills. Gillnets retain fish through entanglement rather than surrounding and concentrating a school.
Marine mammal bycatch: The unintended capture, injury, or death of marine mammals in fishing gear. Dolphins and other mammals may be caught when nets surround mixed schools.
Danish seining: A vessel-based method that uses long ropes to herd fish toward a seine before hauling it aboard. Its ropes herd fish before the net closes, unlike a purse seine’s encirclement.
Sardine fishery: Commercial fishing for sardines, small schooling fish harvested for food and fish products. Sardines gather in schools that are accessible to encircling nets.
