Seizure

A seizure is a transient episode of abnormal electrical activity in the brain that can alter movement, sensation, awareness, or behavior.

Focal seizure: A seizure that begins in networks on one side of the brain. It shows how seizures can start in a localized brain network.
Epilepsy: A neurological disorder characterized by an enduring predisposition to recurrent unprovoked seizures. A seizure is an episode; epilepsy is a condition that can predispose to repeated episodes.
Seizure semiology: The description and classification of observable symptoms and signs during a seizure. Observed features help clinicians infer where and how an episode begins.
Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy: A sudden, unexpected death in a person with epilepsy that is not explained by another cause. It is a rare but serious risk associated with epilepsy and seizures.
Generalized seizure: A seizure that engages networks on both sides of the brain from its onset. It contrasts with seizures that begin in a limited brain region.
Provoked seizure: A seizure occurring in close relation to a temporary trigger or acute brain insult. It distinguishes episodes linked to an immediate cause from unprovoked events.
Seizure first aid: Immediate measures that protect someone during a seizure and support recovery afterward. Safe positioning and timing can reduce harm during an episode.
Seizure-related injury: Physical harm sustained during or because of a seizure. Loss of awareness or control can cause falls, burns, and other injuries.
Epileptic discharge: A synchronized burst of abnormal neuronal activity associated with epilepsy. Such discharges are the electrical events underlying many seizures.
Febrile seizure: A seizure associated with fever in a young child, without evidence of central nervous system infection. It is a common age-specific seizure type with a distinct clinical context.
