Selim III

Selim III was Ottoman sultan from 1789 to 1807. His Nizam-ı Cedid reforms sought to modernize the army and strengthen the state, provoking resistance that ended his reign.

Nizam-ı Cedid: Selim III’s program of military and administrative reform, including a new European-style army. This reform program gave Selim’s modernization drive its name and institutional core.
Kabakçı Mustafa: An Ottoman rebel leader whose 1807 uprising helped overthrow Selim III. His revolt mobilized opposition to the New Order Army in Istanbul.
Abdülhamid I: Ottoman sultan from 1774 to 1789 and Selim III’s uncle and predecessor. Selim inherited the throne and an empire strained by war during Abdülhamid’s reign.
