Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm

A medieval Turkic Muslim state in Anatolia, founded in the late eleventh century and ruled by the Seljuk dynasty. Its capital was Konya during much of its history.

Battle of Manzikert: A 1071 battle in which the Seljuk Empire defeated the Byzantine Empire and captured Emperor Romanos IV. The defeat weakened Byzantine control in Anatolia and opened the way for Turkic settlement.
Konya: A city in central Anatolia that served as the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm’s capital for much of its history. The court and major institutions concentrated in the sultanate’s principal capital.
Ala al-Din Kayqubad I: A Seljuk sultan of Rûm who ruled from 1220 to 1237 and presided over a period of political and architectural expansion. His reign is often treated as the sultanate’s high point in power and patronage.
Battle of Köse Dağ: A 1243 battle in which Mongol forces defeated the Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm in eastern Anatolia. The defeat forced the sultanate into Mongol vassalage and accelerated its fragmentation.
Suleiman ibn Qutalmish: A Seljuk prince who established rule in Anatolia and founded the Sultanate of Rûm. He founded the state in the political vacuum that followed Seljuk expansion.
Seljuk architecture: The architectural traditions developed under Seljuk rule, combining Iranian, Central Asian, and local influences. Mosques, schools, tombs, and caravanserais expressed the state’s authority and patronage.
Rumi: A Persian-language poet and Sufi mystic who lived from 1207 to 1273 and spent much of his life in Konya. His life and work unfolded in the sultanate’s capital and its cosmopolitan courtly setting.
Mongol Empire: The vast Eurasian empire founded by Genghis Khan in the early thirteenth century. Mongol power overwhelmed the sultanate and constrained its rulers after 1243.
Seljuk Empire: A medieval Sunni Muslim empire ruled by a Turkic dynasty across parts of Central Asia and the Middle East. The Anatolian sultanate emerged from the wider Seljuk political and dynastic world.
Caravanserai: A roadside inn that provided lodging and protection for travelers and merchants on long-distance routes. The sultanate used these institutions to support trade and secure travel across Anatolia.
