Semen

Semen is a fluid containing sperm cells and secretions from male reproductive glands, expelled during ejaculation. Its fluid components support sperm transport and function.

Sperm: Sperm are male reproductive cells that can fertilize an egg cell. They are the reproductive cells carried within semen.
Ejaculation: Ejaculation is the expulsion of semen through the urethra, usually during orgasm. It is the process that releases semen from the reproductive tract.
Semen analysis: Semen analysis is a laboratory examination of semen volume, sperm concentration, motility, and other characteristics. It measures semen properties used in evaluating male reproductive function.
Pre-ejaculate: Pre-ejaculate is fluid released from the urethra before ejaculation, primarily from bulbourethral glands. It is released before semen, though it can sometimes contain sperm.
Seminal plasma: Seminal plasma is the fluid portion of semen, excluding sperm cells. It supplies most of semen’s volume and contains secretions from reproductive glands.
Emission (reproductive physiology): Emission is the movement of sperm and glandular secretions into the posterior urethra before ejaculation. It assembles semen in the urethra before its expulsion.
Male infertility: Male infertility is the inability to achieve pregnancy because of factors affecting male reproductive function. Abnormal semen findings can help identify causes of reduced fertility.
Urine: Urine is liquid waste produced by the kidneys and expelled through the urethra. It shares the urethral passage with semen but has a different source and function.
Seminal vesicle: A seminal vesicle is a paired gland that contributes fluid to semen. Its secretion provides much of semen’s volume and contains fructose.
Vas deferens: The vas deferens is a muscular duct that carries sperm from the epididymis toward the urethra. It delivers sperm into the route where glandular fluids join them.
