Semi-empirical mass formula

A liquid-drop-inspired formula that estimates nuclear binding energies from proton and neutron counts using volume, surface, Coulomb, asymmetry, and pairing terms. It predicts nuclear masses through the relation between binding energy and mass.

Nuclear binding energy: The energy required to separate an atomic nucleus completely into its constituent protons and neutrons. The formula estimates this quantity, then uses it to infer nuclear mass.
Nuclear mass: The mass of an atomic nucleus, determined by its constituent nucleons and their binding energy. The formula’s central output is an estimate of this quantity.
Nuclear shell model: A model that explains nuclear structure through nucleons occupying quantized energy levels. It captures discrete shell effects that the smooth mass formula omits.
Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker: A German physicist whose work included a widely used formula for nuclear binding energies. His 1935 formulation helped establish the formula’s standard name and form.
Liquid-drop model: A model that treats an atomic nucleus as a charged, nearly incompressible drop of nuclear matter. It supplies the bulk-and-surface picture behind the formula’s largest energy terms.
Nuclear stability: The tendency of a nucleus to resist spontaneous transformation into another nuclear configuration. Binding-energy estimates help compare the stability of different nuclides.
Hartree–Fock method: A self-consistent approximation that represents interacting particles using independent-particle orbitals. It offers a microscopic route to nuclear properties rather than a fitted bulk-energy formula.
George Gamow: A theoretical physicist who applied liquid-drop ideas to the atomic nucleus. His early nuclear liquid-drop work helped prepare the conceptual ground for the formula.
Coulomb energy: Electrostatic energy arising from the repulsion between charged particles. Its proton-repulsion term reduces binding as nuclear charge increases.
Nuclear fission: The splitting of a heavy atomic nucleus into lighter nuclei, usually releasing energy and neutrons. The formula’s surface and Coulomb terms help explain why splitting heavy nuclei can release energy.
