Seminal vesicle

A paired gland behind the bladder that secretes fructose-rich fluid, contributing much of semen’s volume and supporting sperm function.

Seminal plasma: The fluid portion of semen, containing secretions from the reproductive tract. Seminal vesicle fluid forms a large share of this mixture.
Male reproductive system: The organs and ducts that produce, mature, transport, and deliver sperm. The seminal vesicles are accessory glands within this system.
Congenital absence of the vas deferens: A developmental condition in which one or both vasa deferentia fail to form. It can accompany absent or underdeveloped seminal vesicles.
Bulbourethral gland: A paired gland that releases mucus-like fluid into the urethra before ejaculation. Unlike the seminal vesicle, it contributes a small amount of pre-ejaculatory fluid.
Fructose: A simple sugar that serves as an energy source for cells, including sperm. The vesicles supply fructose that sperm can metabolize.
Urinary bladder: A hollow organ that stores urine before it leaves the body. The vesicles lie behind the bladder.
Ejaculatory duct obstruction: A blockage that impairs passage of semen through one or both ejaculatory ducts. Obstruction can trap vesicle secretions and reduce semen volume.
Epididymis: A coiled duct where sperm mature and are stored after leaving the testis. It handles sperm maturation, whereas the vesicle adds seminal fluid.
Semen coagulation: The temporary thickening of semen after ejaculation, followed by enzymatic liquefaction. Seminal vesicle proteins help form the initial semen coagulum.
Vas deferens: A muscular duct that transports sperm from the epididymis toward the urethra. Each vesicle duct joins a vas deferens to form an ejaculatory duct.
