Senegal River

The Senegal River is a major West African river that flows west to the Atlantic Ocean and forms much of the boundary between Senegal and Mauritania.

Bafing River: A major headwater of the Senegal River rising in Guinea and flowing through Mali. It supplies much of the river’s flow before joining the Bakoye.
West African monsoon: A seasonal circulation that brings most of West Africa’s annual rainfall. Its rains drive the river’s annual rise and flood pulse.
Lake Guiers: A freshwater lake in northwestern Senegal connected to the Senegal River. Canals and river management make it a major source of water for cities and farms.
Ghana Empire: A medieval West African state whose core territory lay between the Senegal and Niger rivers. The river basin lay near important routes and territories of early Sahelian states.
Bakoye River: A West African river that rises in Guinea and joins the Bafing in Mali. Its confluence with the Bafing forms the Senegal River.
Manantali Dam: A dam on the Bafing River in Mali, completed in 1988. It regulates water reaching the Senegal River and supports hydropower and irrigation.
Djoudj National Bird Sanctuary: A protected wetland in northern Senegal known for migratory birds. Its ecological conditions depend on freshwater flows in the lower river system.
Trans-Saharan trade: A network of commercial routes crossing the Sahara between North and West Africa. River valleys connected inland communities to routes carrying goods across the Sahel.
Falémé River: A river rising in Guinea that flows north along parts of the Senegal–Mali border. It is the Senegal River’s largest tributary.
Diama Dam: A low dam near the Senegal River’s mouth, built to limit seawater intrusion. It helps maintain freshwater conditions upstream for irrigation and water supply.
